Performing translational studies to characterise effects of dietary flavanols on cardiovascular function in health and disease using various in vitro and in vivo models.
Our group provides a state-of-the-art, cardiovascular research environment that aims to advance integrative and translational research in the field of cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Research objectives are recognised by regional, national and international partners from academia, regulatory authorities and industry including the 6th EU framework programme (EU project “My Heart”). All state of the art techniques in cardiovascular research are covered, ranging from molecular analysis to patient studies.
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Marc W. Merx (1971) is associate Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at UDUS. His previous experience includes several national grants in cardiovascular research. Prior to the recent relocation to Duesseldorf, he has served as board member of the “Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Klinische Forschung (IZKF) BIOMAT”, an interdisciplinary research consortium at the UKAachen with an annual budget of approx. 5 million €. In this function he has drafted several calls and evaluated numerous proposals and has long standing experience in the evaluation of diverse research projects, covering the whole spectrum of life sciences and clinical medicine.
Prof. Dr. Malte Kelm (1960) is full Professor of Medicine and Cardiology and holds the position of department head and chairman of the Dept. of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Pulmonology and Vascular Medicine at UDUS. He is member of several medical boards and Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. Together with his colleague Marc Merx he contributed to the formulation of the present project description. His previous experience includes several national and international grants in cardiovascular research. He has served numerous times as invited reviewer for the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the evaluation of grant applications and in the evaluation of research consortia.
